Lauryn Hill Gets 3 Months in Jail For Failure To Pay Taxes

Lauryn Hill has been sentenced to three months in prison after failing to pay taxes on more than $1.8 million between 2005 and 2007.

Last month, she was granted 2 weeks to pay off the debt in which she had a new record deal and was going to use a loan from the deal to pay off what she owed. Unfortunately, she did not meet the deadline. Despite having paid more than $900,000 in the past several days, Hill still owed interest and penalties.
As Hill, 37, stood before the judge, she stated:
“I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them. I had an economic system imposed on me.”
What a character. It’s not fair to blame the economic when you are the one who mismanaged your money Lauryn. Take responsibility for your actions! During her statement to the judge, Hill explained she had always meant to eventually pay the taxes but was unable to during a period of time when she dropped out of the music business and became reclusive.
She stated:
“There were veiled threats, there was blacklisting. I was told, ‘That’s how it goes, it comes with the territory.’ I came to be perceived as a cash cow and not a person. When people capitalize on a persona, they forget there is a person in there.
She’s to report to prison July 8 and it is unclear at the moment where she will serve her sentence. The judge also sentenced her to an additional three months of home confinement after her release and must pay a $60,000 fine.
